What is Pilates?

Joseph Pilates and his wife created the Pilates movement, known then as Contrology in the early 1920’s. As a sickly child, he devoted his life to getting himself back into physical health. He used martial arts, bodybuilding, gymnastics, boxing and yoga to get his physical strength back. To assist his asthma he exercised outside. Contrology (now known as Pilates) focused on the spine and awareness of breath. Joseph took Contrology to New York and with its location close to Broadway dancers and performers started the practice of Pilates to increase their core strength and flexibility. Here his aim was to emphasise on rehabilitation of typical dancers injuries.

The Six Principles are the basis of Pilates – Breathing deeply into the lungs and belly brings about a mental awareness of relaxation to then Concentrate on the move/exercise. Each move is performed in a Precise manner – slowly and with Control. Online Pilates will give a couple of exercises that will Flow.  Centreing is for finding your body’s centre of gravity.

Why do Pilates online?

At streetefit, you will be guided by an experienced and knowledgeable instructor to get the best out of every move. In the privacy of your own home and being part of a small online group you can join an Online Pilates class and be assured of getting the best out of your practice.

I hear of so many people saying their hips and backs are tight and sore. We are all subject to sitting down in front of a computer, hunched over a device or don’t sit or stand properly, hence poor posture, sore upper and lower backs, tight hip flexors. Online Pilates concentrates on exercises and stretches to relieve all of these symptoms.

Breathing

Online Pilates begins with deep breathing to calm the body and mind. Deep breathing prepares the muscles for the work ahead and having a calm mind allows you to concentrate on the muscles you are using. At streetefit we make you aware of which muscles should be working and you can use your breath to enhance the exercise. After the class you will feel relaxed because you have used the breath to bring yourself back to what’s important and that is your physical and mental health. Now that you are relaxed your sleep will be more effective in repairing your body and mind.

Core Strength and Balance

Whether you sit all day, play football, netball, cricket, lift weights or participate in any sport that requires flexibility, agility and core strength, taking the Online Pilates class will give you some much needed physical care. Your core which encompasses your pelvis, lower back, hips and abdominal region are the central part of your body. Core exercises will train the muscles to support the spine and abdominals to create a better posture and room for your internal organs to sit in their right spots and function properly.

Isometric exercises are used to create a stronger core, paired with the slow breathing your core muscles strengthen.

Balance is imperative for the body’s alignment and co-ordination. Just walking on an uneven ground requires the body to adjust. Day to day living requires balance, consider walking up stairs – one step after the other – balancing on one leg each step. When reaching into a cupboard or twisting you need balance to execute the movement.

Stability

Stability is important whether you’re on the playing field or doing regular activities. In fact, most sports and other physical activities depend on stable core muscles. Creating stability in the feet is essential for everyday life. Stability and Balance go hand in hand.

Posture

Posture is a vital component of being healthy. Correct posture helps the muscles to function in a more efficient way. Helping the body use less energy, therefore less muscle fatigue. Correct posture keeps the spine aligned and the bones in their correct place. If you stand and sit properly, you eliminate the possibility of back pain and decrease the abnormal wear of joints. Your organs can function properly too. Sitting or standing up straight gives the organs room to do their job.

Mobility

Online Pilates classes aids you in getting stronger, more flexible and a lesser chance of injury by focusing on muscle control and strength and with your mind focused on the moves you can get so much out of the online class. Greater mobility, particularly as you get older is essential. With a very low impact form of exercise you learn to move your joints and muscles in an effective manner.

Flexibility

Flexibility is created by stretching the muscles. Online Pilates with streetefit assists in stretching the muscles as well as increasing core strength. If a muscle is strong and stretched it is unlikely to be injured. In an online Pilates class with streetefit there is lots of stretching. No one stretches enough so streetefit has made it an integral part of the Online Pilates classes.

Pelvic Floor

The pelvic floor is a group of muscles extending from the front of the pelvis to the coccyx at the back. Imagine them like a hammock holding up the organs (the bladder, bowel and uterus) inside the pelvis. Both men and women have pelvic floors which support the organs.

Pregnancy in females and prostate issues with males can lead to a weak pelvic floor. Learning to strengthen this band of muscles will, most of the time, assist in fixing incontinence and take away the embarrassment of leaking. streetefit will help you get your pelvic floor issues resolved.

Equipment

Generally, Online Pilates does not use equipment. Recently, props or equipment have been introduced into Online Pilates classes. The use of a small ball (approximately 25cm diameter) is used to enhance the Pilates exercises. Other props that are used in streetefit Online Pilates classes are therabands and resistance bands. These props help range of motion by giving support.

Other props are used in classes such as the Pilates ring and Swiss balls. streetefit don’t use these as most participants don’t have them. Come and join a class to see how these props are used.
